Default 12v adapter question

Hi Guys
I am an artist that uses lights and electronic bits and bobs in my work. I have very little knowledge so excuse what might be a silly question. I am slowly learning by reading on line. I just found your website while trying to solve a problem.

I make robotic looking creatures that normally consists of LEDS or some form of lighting and some other form of electronic devices.
I want to know if I can wire them all to the same power supply.

Say I have 15 Twister permlight LEDs in a line all 12 v 65ma each = 975ma
Another type of LEDs that say add to 400ma
And a EL panel digital clock panel using 12v 600ma

I want to know is it ok to use a 12v 2000ma regulated adapter for the lot?
Also how would i wire these all together?
Would I just get the 3 above wires together and wire all negatives together then all positives together, then wire the adapter wires to them? Is this ok to do?

Hope the above makes sense.
Thanks
JD

jd47 - it is not ok to connect different type of devices to the same power supply because they have different impedances and loads. Some loads are reactive other inductive or capacitive, so I dont recommend you to use the same 12v adapter.

Try to use a higher voltage transformer, then a bridge rectifier with diodes and finally 3 voltage regulators like 7812 to power up each line.
The best way is to use 3 transformers for each line but this is my opinion.

Hi,

Why don't you use highly efficient SMPS Adaptors for your work.........

A switched-mode power supply (also switching-mode power supply, SMPS, or simply switcher) is an electronic power supply unit (PSU) that incorporates a switching regulator in order to provide the required dc output voltage.
Once i visited a site providing these adapters...................
You can ask for complete details through that website about these adapters........ just log into above keyword for further details..........
i hope this helps u out.....

ha ha well still not too sure ha ha, but at least i know what to look for thanks,I did google came up with a few power supplies but still not sure if i can wire several items to this type of power supply. My local maplins shop is useless they dont know there arse from their elbow in there . All just kids with no interest in electronics. I couldn't actually find one in their anyway. Maplins are normally a lot more expensive anyway.

I normally use cpc will drop them an email and see which one of the poewer supplies you suggested will do the job.

Thanks for your help at least i am in the right direction and there is something out there that will allow me to stop using several power supplies to one sculpture, making everything more tidy, so much appreciated.
